Lea Delaria.
Provincetown Jazz Festival
Three Days of Jazz with Lea
Delaria, Suede, and More
By Kahrin Deines
July
29th, 2006
Jazz has been a part of Provincetown
since its start as an American art form. Early jazz greats, such as Miles
Davis, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone performed in Provincetown in the 1950’s and 60’s, usually at the
A-House, and jazz musicians continue to swing the twisting length of the Cape today.

With over 30 jazz
musicians scheduled to perform at the Jazz Jam Brunch, the event promises
to be a mid-day feast for the ears.

Last year, Bart Weisman, a local jazz drummer, resolved to
create a Jazz Festival in Provincetown that
would bring all this Cape jazz talent
together. The result, one evening of non-stop jazz, was such a success that
this year the 2nd Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival will last three days,
with two evenings of jazz at Town Hall on August 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. and a
Jazz Jam Brunch on August 13 at Cape Inn at 12 p.m.
The festival will get off to a swinging start on August 11 with headliner Lea DeLaria, a comic, writer, Broadway star and
jazz vocalist, whose jazz albums “Playin’ It Cool”
and “Double Standards” have swung her into the spotlight of critical acclaim
in the last 5 years. Jazz musicians Carol Wyeth, Janette
Mason, Mary Ann McSweeney, John
Harrison and Bart Weisman
will also perform.

On August 12, the stellar songbird Suede will
add her glorious alto warble to the festival’s sound offerings. Provincetown troubadour
and musician Zoe Lewis, Stephanie Jordan,
Mary Ann McSweeney, John Harrison
and Bart Weisman will take to the
stage as well.
The festival will close with a Jazz Jam Brunch on August 13 at the Cape Inn
at 12 p.m., which will be led by Bruce Abbott, a jazz master who can coax sounds
from the saxophone, the flute, and the voice. With over 30 jazz musicians
scheduled to perform over the course of the afternoon, this event promises to
be a mid-day feast for the ears.
