A JAZZY AUGUST
Summer
days are pure magic on Cape Cod, and the nights are magical too. When the Sun goes down and the stars
come out, cool breezes soothe sunned skin and those with a taste for nightlife
can easily find a second wind no matter how active the day has been.
If
it's music you crave, thereŐs plenty to keep you entertained on these starry
summer evenings, no matter what your taste. This month, jazz is the star!
The
7th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival
will be held on August 12 and 13th at the beautifully renovated Provincetown
Town Hall and on the 15th at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. The festival was
founded by and is led by one of the hardest working musician on Cape Cod, Bart Weisman. Mr. WeismanŐs drum beats can be heard with his various
collaborators at numerous other venues across Cape Cod including a summer jazz
series at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
This
year's festival opens in Provincetown on the 12th with recent New Zealand
imports Adrienne Hindmarsh on organ
and vocals with Josh Hindmarsh on
guitar, accompanied by Mr. Weisman on drums. String of Pearls,
featuring the amazing vocalists Holli
Ross, Sue Halloran and Jeanne
OŐConnor return to the festival with a range of material including the
Andrew Sisters, bebop, original arrangements with a Brazilian flavor, 1960Ős
girl group sounds, and more.
On
the 13th, the gifted Boston-based jazz vocalist Dane Vannatter will be accompanied by Fred Boyle on piano, Laird
Boles on bass and Bart Weisman on
drums. That should warm up the crowd before the high-style,
14-piece big band, Stage Door Canteen
takes the stage.
The
Festival moves to Cotuit for itŐs final night on the 15th with Cape CodŐs own Bruce Abbott on sax and flute, who will
also accompany vocalists Holli Ross making
her solo debut and vocalist Dane
Vannatter.
