Jazz Festival in Provincetown

The 4th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival is held this year Aug. 15 through 17 at Provincetown High School when the line-up of performers is long and impressive.

Kicking off things on Friday night at 8 p.m. is the Afro Bop Alliance playing some mean Latin jazz and Zoe Lewis, known locally as a one-woman band, who plays and sings some fun songs with zip and enthusiasm.

Saturday’s show at 8 p.m. features Greg Abate on sax and flute and Dane Vannatter with his soulful sounds.

The 1 p.m. show on Sunday breaks out all the stops when Joe Muranyi, clarinet player for five year with Louis Armstrong and his All Stars Band, hits the stage when he may even sing and play the sax. Muranyi also worked with Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Billy Butterfield and Marian McPartland. Locally he’s been seen with Marie Marcus and Lou Colombo.

Muranyi will be joined by jazz vocalist Mercedes Hall and Marcelle Gauvin. Hall played the Boston scene since her teen years and her son is actor Anthony Michael Hall. Her daughter Mary Chestaro is also a singer-songwriter.

Jazz and blues vocalist Charlie Harris performs along with Steve Ahern on trumpet and flute. Harris made his local debut last year and was named by Boston Globe as one of the top male vocalists in New England.

Rounding out the festival roster is John Harrison III on piano, Bart Weisman on drums and Chris Rathbun on bass.
